Travellog Bochum-Stiepel 2008

Painting in the Monastery from September 22nd to September 25th 2008

The participants met in the monastery on Monday 21st of September around 8:00 o´clock in the evening.
We were cordially welcomed by the monks which everybody could feel immediately. An oasis amidst our hectical time.
After a short „getting-to-know-each-other“, we withdrew to our rooms as some of us had to travel a long way in order to participate. On Tuesday in the morning we began painting in a separate room (it was spacious with an own kitchen). As usual we started with the three techniques pastell chalk, watercolour and acryl on canvas.
Having a large variety of motifs, the participants looked for their individual stimuli for painting. Motifs of flowers, landscapes, abstract works, people and bodies came into being. Course guide Martin Ludwig always had an idea to help us with banning our motifs on canvas.
If it had been requested, Martin gave us a helping hand and even sketched with his own pencil or chalk the necessary corrections in our paintings.
After lunch and a short break, we continued painting.
Unfortunately there was rather cool weather outside, so the open-air part of the course was quit. Nevertheless a large variety of beautiful paintings came into being within these three days which also pleased our instructor. In the evening and in the morning we had the chance to visit the holy service at the church of the monastery. These services were started with Gregorian choir songs of the monks and soon became „nourishment for our souls“.
A tour through the monastery by Prior Pater Maximilian Heim was included.
